quick answer: the best Codex alternative is Claude Code (#1 of 13 coding agents, 9.0/10), the strongest agent we rank for handing off multi-file work. want an ai editor rather than an agent app? Cursor (#2, 8.5). want open source and any model, local ones included? OpenCode (#3, 8.5). OpenAI Codex itself sits at #6 with 8.0/10, so it's no slouch: most people leaving it want a different model, an editor, or no OpenAI account at all.
why people look for a Codex alternative
- you want models that aren't OpenAI's. Codex runs OpenAI's own family (GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Luna and co). if you'd rather have Claude, Gemini or an open model doing the work, you need a different agent.
- the limits. OpenAI's own estimate for Plus is 15 to 160 local messages per five hours on GPT-6.1 Sol, and weekly limits may apply too. big tasks eat that fast.
- you want an editor, not an agent you hand jobs to. Codex is agent first. some people want ai inside the editor they type in all day.
- you want open source or your own keys. with an API key Codex runs in the CLI, SDK and IDE extension, but the cloud features (GitHub reviews, Slack and the rest) need a ChatGPT sign in.

why each one ranks where it does
Claude Code (#1): the step up for big repo work
the closest like-for-like swap, and the one we rate highest. it's an agent in your terminal and IDE, with a desktop app and web too, and it's built for the jobs Codex users hand off: features across a dozen files, tests, migrations. it comes with paid Claude plans (Pro at $20 a month, $17 billed annually, and Max from $100) and shares one usage pool with the rest of Claude. when you hit a limit you can wait, upgrade, or turn on usage credits at API rates. the full fight is in Codex vs Claude Code.
Cursor (#2): if you want an editor, not an agent app
an ai editor first, with tab, an agent, and cloud agents and automations from Premium ($30 a month) up. Plus at $8 is Grok models only; on Premium and up, third-party models like GPT and Claude are billed separately at API list price. head-to-head: Codex vs Cursor.
OpenCode (#3): the open source Codex alternative
MIT licensed, runs in the terminal, as a desktop app or as an IDE extension. it connects to 75+ providers through Models.dev, local models included, and ships with free models so you can start at nothing. the cheeky bit: you can log in with your ChatGPT Plus or Pro account and keep using OpenAI models, just in a different agent. more in OpenCode vs Claude Code.
GitHub Copilot (#4): if your work already lives on GitHub
works in VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode, Neovim, Zed and more, plus a CLI and a cloud agent you assign issues to. GitHub's plans page lists GPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok models. agent mode, code review, the CLI and the cloud agent spend GitHub ai credits ($0.01 each); completions stay unlimited on paid plans. Pro is $10 a month. more: GitHub Copilot pricing.
Cline (#5): pay for the model and nothing else
open source agent for VS Code and the CLI. free for individuals, no subscription or seat fee: you pay for inference through Cline at cost, or bring your own key from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, OpenRouter, DeepSeek and the rest.
Google Antigravity (#7): the $0 agent IDE
Google's agent-first IDE with an app, a CLI and IDE extensions. the individual plan is $0 with unlimited Tab and Command requests and basic weekly rate limits; Google AI Pro and Ultra raise the limits.
Kiro (#9): specs before code
AWS's agent IDE, with a spec mode alongside the usual vibe mode, so you can pin the plan down before the agent starts typing. it runs in the IDE, a CLI and on the web. good for people who've watched an agent wander off once too often. free plan: 50 credits/mo (perpetual). more in Kiro pricing.
Gemini CLI (#13): the Codex CLI swap, if work pays
Google's open source terminal agent, the most direct swap for the Codex CLI. Google's own docs say unpaid tier and Google One users were moved to Antigravity CLI on june 18, 2026, so it's now for people on a paid Gemini API key, Vertex AI or a Gemini Code Assist licence. that's a big part of why it sits so low.
the free Codex alternative
- OpenCode: free and open source, with free models included, or point it at a local one.
- Google Antigravity: $0 individual plan with basic weekly limits.
- Cline: free software; you pay for the model unless you run a local one.
- GitHub Copilot: the free plan gets limited chat and agent usage.
worth saying: Codex itself has a free version in ChatGPT Free (GPT-6 Luna in the desktop app, still rolling out). every free tier side by side: best free ai coding agents.
