Codex vs Claude Code: which coding agent should you pay for?

Updated · prices checked on vendor pages

Quick verdict: For heavy, multi-file graft across a real repo, Claude Code is still our #1. If you already pay for ChatGPT, OpenAI Codex is sat there in your plan, and it's the better pick when you want cloud tasks and GitHub reviews running while you put the kettle on.

Unlike Cursor vs Claude Code, this one is a fair fight. Both are agents. Both live in your terminal and your editor. Both bill against a subscription rather than a meter. The differences are in the plans, the cloud bits and how hard you lean on them.

Where Claude Code wins

The big jobs. Hand it a feature that touches a dozen files, let it plan, edit and run your tests, then review the diff. That's what it's best at, and why it tops our coding agents table.

One pool, no faff. Claude Code shares limits with the rest of your Claude plan. No separate meter to babysit, and nothing extra gets charged unless you switch usage credits on.

Max is a proper step up. If you live in it all day, Max at 5x or 20x Pro usage is where the session limits stop getting in your way.

Where Codex wins

You've probably already paid for it. Codex comes with ChatGPT Plus, Pro and Business. If the ChatGPT sub is already on the card, trying Codex costs you nothing extra.

Cloud and GitHub. On Plus and up you get Codex cloud tasks, @codex on issues and PRs, and automatic code review on GitHub. Fire off a task, go to the pub, come back to a pull request.

Cheaper door in. ChatGPT Go at $8/mo gets you Codex in the desktop app on GPT-6 Luna. Fine for light jobs. For the CLI and IDE you want Plus.

Pro has more headroom. OpenAI says Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit, with tiers at $100, $200 and $500 a month.

Pick both if: you're a heavy user. Plenty of builders run Claude Code for the big refactors and keep Codex on GitHub doing reviews. Two $20 plans still cost less than one Max or Pro.
