Claude Code pricing explained: which plan you actually need

updated · prices checked on vendor pages

quick verdict: start on Pro at $20/mo ($17/mo if you pay for the year). move to Max from $100/mo once you keep hitting the session limit. teams want team Standard seats at $25/seat/mo ($20 annual). only go pay-as-you-go on the API if you want metered billing and hard spend caps.

Claude Code is our #1 coding agent (9.0/10). there's no separate Claude Code price tag: it comes with a paid Claude plan, or you pay per token through the Claude Console. here's what each route costs.

the plans

plan price Claude Code? usage
Free $0 no chat only
Pro $20/mo, or $17/mo billed annually ($200 up front) yes more usage than Free
Max 5x from $100/mo yes 5x Pro usage per 5-hour session, plus $100/mo in API credits
Max 20x not printed on the page (Max is "from $100") yes 20x Pro usage per 5-hour session, plus $200/mo in API credits
Team, Standard seat $25/seat/mo, or $20 billed annually yes more usage than Pro, 2 to 150 people
Team, Premium seat $125/seat/mo, or $100 billed annually yes 5x a Standard seat
Enterprise $20/seat/mo billed annually, plus usage at API rates yes 20-seat minimum

prices exclude tax. Max is billed monthly only.

or pay by the token

sign Claude Code in with a Claude Console account instead and you pay API rates, per million tokens:

model input output
Haiku 5.5 $0.10 $0.50
Sonnet 5.5 $2 $10
Opus 5.5 $4 $20

what does that come to? Anthropic's own docs say enterprise deployments average around $13 per developer per active day and $150 to $250 per developer per month, with 90% of users under $30 per active day. your mileage will vary, mostly with model choice and how long you leave sessions open.

the catches (read these)

1. there's no free Claude Code. the Free plan doesn't include it. Pro is the cheapest way in.

2. limits come in windows. subscription usage resets on a rolling five-hour window and a weekly one, and it's shared with Claude chat. hit the limit and you wait, move up a plan, or switch on usage credits and keep going at standard API rates.

3. usage credits are opt-in. pro and Max can turn on usage credits to work past the limit, with a monthly spend limit you set. leave it unset and the docs show it as "unlimited", so set one.

4. long sessions cost more than they look. Claude Code sends the whole conversation with each request. a one-liner in a session that's been open all day still draws on the lot. use /clear between unrelated jobs.

5. Opus burns it fastest. Anthropic's advice is Sonnet for most coding and Opus for the hard architectural stuff. check where it's going with /usage.

is Claude Code worth it vs the rest?

cheapest paid way in notes
Claude Code $20/mo (pro) our #1. session limits, not surprise bills
Cursor $8/mo (plus) Grok models only at that price
OpenAI Codex $8/mo (ChatGPT Go) also in ChatGPT Free, with limited usage
GitHub Copilot $10/mo (pro) free tier too

Claude Code isn't the cheapest door in. it's the one we'd hand a repo and a ticket. for the head-to-heads, see Cursor vs Claude Code and Codex vs Claude Code. every plan side by side lives on the AI coding agent price sheet.
