quick answer: Claude Code vs GitHub Copilot comes down to "delegate the whole job" vs "ai everywhere you already work". Claude Code is #1 of 13 on our coding agents board (9.0/10) because it's the best we rank at multi-file repo work: you describe a feature, it plans, edits across files, runs the commands and checks it works. GitHub Copilot is #4 (8.0/10): the cheapest serious way in, with a free tier, completions in most editors you've heard of, and an agent that picks up issues and opens pull requests right inside GitHub.

why Claude Code ranks higher
it's built to be handed the whole job. describe a feature or paste an error, and Claude Code plans the approach, writes the code across multiple files, and verifies it works. it stages changes, writes commit messages and opens pull requests itself. that's the thing we rank coding agents on, and it's the best at it.
it bends to your repo, not the other way round. a CLAUDE.md in your project root sets the house rules every session (it'll read an existing AGENTS.md too), skills package workflows like /review-pr, and hooks run your formatter or linter around its edits. MCP plugs in your tickets, docs and own tooling.
it scales up when the job does. spawn several agents on different parts of a task with a lead agent stitching it together, run it in CI with GitHub Actions or GitLab CI/CD, pipe logs into it, or schedule it to run overnight in the cloud.
the catch: no free tier, and limits, not bills. Claude Code isn't on Claude's Free plan. Pro is $20 a month ($17 billed annually), and Max starts at $100 for 5x or 20x Pro's usage. your terminal sessions and your chats share one pool that resets every five hours, with weekly limits on top. you'll hit a wall before you hit a surprise invoice, which is either reassuring or annoying depending on the day.
where GitHub Copilot wins
the price of a pint gets you in. Copilot Free costs nothing (limited chat and agent usage, 2,000 completions a month). Pro is $10 a month and includes $15 of GitHub AI Credits; code completions and next edit suggestions don't touch your credits and are unlimited on every paid plan.
it's in every editor going. VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains, Xcode, Neovim, Eclipse and Zed, plus the CLI, a desktop app, github.com and mobile. if half your team lives in JetBrains and the other half in Neovim, Copilot doesn't start a fight.
issues in, pull requests out. assign work to Copilot and its cloud agent researches, plans and writes the code, with or without a pull request, and it reviews PRs too. if your work already lives in GitHub issues and actions, that's very little new plumbing.
pick your model. Copilot's plans list models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, xAI and others, and its cloud agent can even hand tasks to third-party agents like Claude and Codex (in preview).
the honest bit: credits drain by model and task, so a long agent session on a frontier model across many files costs far more than a quick question. you can set a dollar budget for extra usage, or wait for the monthly reset. also, on Free, Pro and Pro+ GitHub may use your Copilot interactions to train models unless you opt out in your settings.
