why Claude Code ranks higher

it's built to be handed the whole job. describe the feature and Claude Code plans it, writes it across files and checks it works. it stages changes, writes the commit message, makes the branch and opens the pull request. you review the result, not every keystroke.

it scales past one session. a lead agent can split a task across agents working in parallel, background agents let you watch several full sessions from one screen, and long jobs can run in the cloud on claude.ai/code while your laptop gets some rest. cloud scheduled tasks keep running with your computer off, and can fire on GitHub events.

the house rules stick. CLAUDE.md is read at the start of every session (it'll read your AGENTS.md instead if that's what you've got), auto memory saves what it learns, skills package repeat jobs like /review-pr, and hooks run your formatter or linter around its actions.

the bill is a plan, not a meter. Claude Code comes with Pro and Max, so a heavy afternoon means waiting for the limit to reset rather than a nasty invoice. the Claude Code pricing guide has the sums.

the catch: there's no free way in (it isn't on Claude's free plan), you're mostly on Anthropic's models, and it isn't open source (the repo says all rights reserved, under Anthropic's Commercial Terms).

where Cline wins

your model, your key. Cline isn't tied to one lab. bring an Anthropic, OpenAI or Google key, route through OpenRouter or Vercel AI Gateway, use Bedrock or Vertex AI through your company's cloud account, or run local models through Ollama or LM Studio. yes, you can run Cline with Claude models on your own Anthropic key, and pay per token instead of per month.

nothing changes without you saying so. plan mode explores the codebase, asks questions and lays out a strategy. act mode carries it out, and every file edit and terminal command waits for your approval. edits show as diffs you can tweak or revert, and checkpoints let you undo the lot. bored of clicking yes? auto-approve exists.

open source, properly. Apache 2.0 on GitHub, so you can read what it does with your code, fork it, or build on it with the Cline SDK. it also does MCP servers, multi-agent teams and scheduled agents, and the CLI runs headless in CI.

the honest bit: "free" means the extension. the model still costs money, and with no plan limit in the way, your bill is only as big as your habits. on Cline's pricing page the JetBrains extension, SSO and team billing sit under Enterprise.
