pick neither if

quick answer: for most devs it's Cursor: #2 of 13 on our coding agents board at 8.5/10, because the agent sits inside a full editor, runs your terminal, drives a browser and checkpoints its own mess. Kiro is #9 (7.0/10) and it wins one specific job: when you want the agent to write the plan down first (requirements, design, tasks) and then work through it.

the short version

why Cursor ranks higher

the agent is the editor. Cursor's agent searches your codebase and the web, edits files, runs shell commands and can control a browser to screenshot and test what it just built. it takes checkpoints before big changes, so when it wanders off you click back to a snapshot instead of untangling it by hand.

it's built for steering, not babysitting. queue the next instruction while it works, or send a follow-up that lands at its next tool call. /goal gives it a long-lived job ("make CI green") and projects hand a big feature to a coordinator agent that delegates to others.

more surfaces on one bill. Premium adds cloud agents, automations, Bugbot code review and Origin code hosting, all drawing from one weekly pool that also covers the CLI. one heavy day doesn't eat your month.

the catch: Plus at $8 a month is Cursor's own models only (Grok and Composer), with no cloud agents, Bugbot or your own API keys. Claude, GPT and Gemini start at Premium, and they're paid at API list price from prepaid credit, not from the pool. read the Cursor pricing guide before you pick a tier.

where Kiro wins

specs, properly. ask for a feature and Kiro writes requirements.md (user stories with acceptance criteria), then design.md (architecture, sequence diagrams, error handling, testing) and tasks.md, a list of discrete tasks it tracks as it builds. you review each phase before it moves on. there's a bugfix spec too, which writes down current, expected and unchanged behaviour before it fixes anything, and Quick Spec for when you can't be bothered with the approval gates.

it runs the plan in parallel. hit run all and Kiro builds a dependency graph from tasks.md, then runs independent tasks at the same time in waves.

hooks keep it honest. a hook is a JSON file in .kiro/hooks/: on PostFileSave, run npx eslint --fix; on PreToolUse, block anything that fails a check. the agent can't forget your lint rules if a hook runs them every time.

it feels familiar. Kiro is built on Code OSS, so your VS Code settings and themes come over and Open VSX extensions work. steering files hold your stack and conventions, and it reads AGENTS.md if you've already got one.

the honest bit: everything costs credits: prompts, spec refinement, task runs and every hook that fires. the free tier is 50 credits a month, unused credits don't roll over, and a pricier model burns more per task (Kiro's own example: Sonnet 4.6 costs 1.3x what auto does). add-on credits are $0.04 each, double the plan rate. the Kiro pricing guide does the sums. and your subscription is for Kiro's own IDE, CLI, web and ACP-compatible editors; routing it through a third-party harness isn't allowed.

faq

is Kiro better than Cursor?

not on our board: Cursor is #2 (8.5/10) and Kiro #9 (7.0/10). Kiro is the better pick when you want a written spec and task list before any code; Cursor for nearly everything else, because the agent, browser, checkpoints and cloud agents all sit in one editor.

is Kiro a VS Code fork like Cursor?

Kiro is based on Code OSS, so you can import your VS Code settings and themes and use Open VSX compatible extensions. it also comes as Kiro CLI and Kiro Web.

who makes Kiro?

Kiro says it's built and operated by AWS. you can sign in with social login or an AWS Builder ID, and enterprise plans are billed through AWS.

Kiro vs Cursor pricing: which is cheaper to start?

Cursor Plus is $8 a month but only runs Cursor's own models. Kiro Pro is $20 a month for 1,000 credits, with Claude and GPT models included, and Kiro takes $20 off (pro-rated) the first time you upgrade. on a budget, compare what you'll actually run: Cursor's third-party models are paid at API list price on Premium ($30) and up.

can i use specs in Cursor?

the Cursor docs we checked don't describe a spec workflow like Kiro's. you can get close by asking the agent to plan first or with a project, but Kiro is the one that writes and tracks requirements.md, design.md and tasks.md for you.
